I’m a science nerd. I confess this openly to all you dear readers, although it’s not very surprising considering I’m a pre-medical student at Hofstra University. I spend a fair amount of time writing lab reports and thinking analytically. I’m not someone you imagine to be the next best author, weaving together words into some snug, comfy blanket that wraps up readers warmly. Many would say science and creative writing do not mix. Oil and water. Polar opposites. You don’t elect a scientist to be the story-teller at a campfire, you expect that scientist to be spouting cold, hard facts. So, it was daunting, to say the least, to create and conduct my own blog page.
But, to tell the truth, I actually love writing. Here is where the true confession of a scientist comes in. I love to imagine fantastical stories and bring them alive on paper, because I find it so rewarding. Behind my scientific and nerdy exterior lies a passion for stringing together words and ideas, for creating a whole new world to escape into. My natural playing field is creative writing because its freedom draws me in to be as silly and imaginative as I want to be. I can let loose and forget that lab report I have to write, containing piles upon piles of structural rules to consider.
I will have to admit, however, that my scientific nature helps me be very argumentative. I love crafting analytical and persuasive pieces because I am a fierce debater at heart. Have an opinion that I disagree with? Prepare to be met with an intense discussion, point by point backed by factual evidence, of why I think I’m right. Words are no longer interwoven string but are brick, as I stack piece by piece into a formidable fortress.
Here, you will find my innermost thoughts and arguments, my release from the many science classes that, at times, hold my creative mind hostage. Here, I welcome you into another part of who I am.
